Canggu is the digital nomad capital of Bali, with sunny skies and sandy beaches attracting expats to its laid back, coastal way of life. Eating out at the many cafes and restaurants is a huge part of the appeal of this bohemian location, and there is an ever growing range of options to choose from.
Traditional Indonesian Nasi Campur buffets, Aussie inspired brunch spots, pizzas and pastas, Mexican flavours, and literally everything else in between; there is no scarcity of cuisines to choose from. In no particular order, here are (in my humble opinion) the best cafes and restaurants in Canggu.
Crate
Crate Cafe, with its rice paddy views, industrial styled interior, and delicious vegan friendly meals at affordable prices, is undisputedly the place to be in Canggu for breakfast and brunch.
Their selection of colourful smoothie bowls and chia puddings, as well as filling breakfasts and barista coffees, are popular with both expats and tourists, who come daily in their droves to the convenient location just off the main drag of Batu Bolong.
There is plenty of scooter parking at the front of the premises, and they even provide covers to keep the seats cool while you eat and relax.
Open 6 AM to 4 PM
Crate Cafe, Jl Canggu Padang, Linjong No. 49F, Canggu
Warung Local
Warung Local is my absolute favourite spot when it comes to a traditional Indonesian Nasi Campur buffet. Don’t be fooled by the name though. This popular spot is a favourite with tourists, expats and remote workers, but I’ve actually never seen any locals there.
With another location in Uluwatu, and the biggest choice of dishes that I’ve seen at any warung, there’s something there to appeal to everyone, including an impressive vegetarian selection.
Choose from chicken, beef and seafood options for the carnivores, or tempe for the non meat eaters, add some delicious sides (they have the best spring rolls I’ve ever tasted), and finish off your plate with some fresh veggies.
Because this place is so popular, there is a constant flow of people coming through and the food is refreshed and topped up regularly.
Open 10 AM to 10 PM
Warung Local, Jl Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu
Shady Shack
Comfortable surroundings, a laid back ambience and a scrumptious vegetarian and vegan menu make Shady Shack one of the absolute best cafes in Canggu.
With an array of all day breakfast items, as well as bowls, burgers, wraps and much more to choose from, this bohemian eatery is conveniently located close to the centre of Canggu and is a great venue for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Their mouth-watering, fresh-tasting menu offerings are hugely satisfying, and the emphasis is on combining flavours to make interesting dishes rather than using meat substitutes.
Open 8 AM to 9 PM
Shady Shack, Jl Tanah Barak No. 57, Canggu
Nyom Nyom
My favourite cafe in the Berawa area of Cangggu, Nyom Nyom offers an irresistible combination of friendly staff, comfortable surroundings, and a solid menu of both Indonesian and Western favourites.
The upstairs seating area is airy and inviting, with plenty of power points and space for working, and the food is of a very high standard but with ridiculously reasonable prices.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this welcoming cafe will have you coming back again and again.
Open 7 AM to 10 PM
Nyom Nyom, Jl Pantai Berawa Br Pelambingin No. 37B, Tibubeneng, Canggu
The Fat Mermaid
With its funky neon interior and appetising fare, Fat Mermaid is another of my favourite restaurants in Canggu. The food is just as colourful and aesthetically pleasing as the decor, and the taste doesn’t let it down either.
Daily cocktail specials and nightly entertainment, including quizzes and live music, as well as a regular Sunday market, all add to the allure of this vibrant spot that is conveniently located just a short walk from the beach.
Open 11 AM to 10 PM
Fat Mermaid, Jl Nelayan No. 33, Canggu
Warung Sika
Another popular port of call for traditional Indonesian Nasi Campur in the Batu Bolong area, Warung Sika has a much more local feel than the ironically named Warung Local.
Although the selection of dishes is a bit smaller, the prices are also lower, and there is a much more intimate atmosphere to this warung with its rice paddy views but still very central location.
Open 9 AM to 9 PM
Warung Sika, Jl Tanah Barak No. 45, Canggu
Pasta Bar
Definitely more an option for delivery and takeout, although they do have a few chairs at the counter, Pasta Bar was one of my favourite dinner spots when I lived in Berawa.
Prices start at 60K IDR (around €4) on orders for collection, and all of the food is cooked fresh to order. Choose from classic or fresh pasta, or the gourmet range, select your sauce, and add any optional extras. My personal favourites are the creamy mushroom and the bolognese.
Delivery is also available via Gofood and the Gojek app.
Open 12 noon to 9 PM Mon & Tues; 12 noon to 10 PM Wed to Sun
Pasta Bar, 84RW & XMR, Tibubeneng, Canggu
Manas Cafe 2
My favourite cafe in the Pererenan area, Manas 2 seems to be something of a hidden gem as it was always a lot less crowded than the other more popular spots along Jalan Pantai Pererenan.
I found myself drifting back there several times a week and ended up sampling a large number of the dishes from the menu, and can honestly say that I never had a bad meal there.
From satisfying breakfast croissants to light and tasty fish tacos, and the best burger I had in all my time in Bali, this underrated little spot never failed to please, and is definitely one of the best cafes and restaurants in Canggu.
Open 6:30 AM to 9:45 PM
Manas Cafe 2, Jl Pantai Pererenan No. 60, Pererenan
Common Cafe
Situated right in the centre of Canggu on Jalan Patai Batu Bolong, this cosy cafe with its deceptively humble looking exterior serves up highly pleasurable breakfast and brunch offerings, as well as healthy but surprisingly indulgent lunches and dinners.
They have an enticing breakfast and all day brunch menu, plus a build your own bowl option at lunch and dinner time, as well as a margarita happy hour from 5 PM to 7 PM.
Add to that their tasty burgers, salads and tacos, and there’s surely something for everyone at this buzzing cafe in the heart of Canggu.
Open 7 AM to 10 PM
Common Cafe, Jl Pantai Batu Bolong No. 65, Canggu
Doppio Cafe
With its fresh and tasty food and generous portions, Doppio is unsurprisingly my favourite cafe for breakfast or lunch in Canggu.
Their menu provides a large range of all day breakfast items and smoothie bowls, as well as lunch options like burgers, sandwiches and wraps, chicken and fish dishes, and Indonesian classics, all at very affordable prices.
They also have daily specials on both breakfast and lunch options, and a tantalising display of cakes and desserts.
Doppio’s sister cafe, Doppio Pink Cafe in Seminyak, has the same excellent menu and is one of my favourite spots to eat in Seminyak.
Open 7 AM to 5 PM
Doppio Cafe, Jl Nelayan No. 25a, Canggu
I Am Vegan Babe
A firm favourite with the vegan crowd in Canggu, I Am Vegan Babe offers plant-based bites and meat substitutes in serene surroundings overlooking the rice fields.
A creative menu jam-packed with scrambled tofu, fake-on (plant-based bacon), chicken and tuna substitutes, and so much more, plus a display of vegan cakes and a selection of coconut ice creams and smoothies, make this a contender for best vegan cafe in Canggu.
Open 7 AM to 10 PM
I Am Vegan Babe, Jl Tanah Barak No. 49, Canggu
